When you look at the 1950s, you’ll soon see that it was only open captioning which was available. It was not until over 20 years later that closed captioning then hit the market. After this, even more captions followed, which has made it what it is today.
What are Captions?
Captions are suited to those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Captions is another word for words, words which are typically placed at the bottom of the screen. Captions give the deaf or hard of hearing the chance to understand or enjoy dialogue in much the same way that other people are able to. So that brings about the next question, what are types?
What are the Types?
Types do vary depending on how the captions appear and how they are accessed. They also depend on the information that is provided as well. These include subtitles, closed captions and then hard of hearing.
Closed Captions
Closed captions are hidden on the 21st line of the VBI of the video signal. They are only made visible when it is decoded at the time of viewing. Normally you have white letters which are then encased in a black box. Captioning software is normally used to add captions to a video file.
Subtitles
Subtitles are normally white or in some cases are yellow. They have a black rim or sometimes they have a drop shadow. Some of them are always visible, much in the same way as open captions are on DCMP videos. They are displayed when you enable the option in the menu.

Subtitles for the Deaf
Subtitles for the deaf or the hard of hearing are almost the same as subtitles, but they include information which ranges from sound effects to speaker identification. They also contain other information which includes sound effects and nonspeech features. These are presented as being as close as possible to verbatim. Foreign subtitles, which are normally for hearing viewers, usually do not contain any information other than the dialogue. Even then, this is quite often edited. Some may translate very important information that is printed on the screen, which can include written messages or street signs.
What are the Various Methods?
Methods can vary depending on when the captions are created and then displayed. These vary depending on when they are created, whether it is offline or online. Of course, offline captions are created and added when a video segment is recorded before it is aired. Online captions refer to captions which are created and then displayed at the time of the program’s origination. Sometimes they are called real-time captions. Examples of programming that utilises this kind of captioning include sporting events, newscasts and other types of events. These do not allow for offline captions and therefore other avenues need to be explored.
