How To Increase Awareness: Benefits Of Green Living

The 21st century has seen us all become much more aware of our surroundings and this has been mainly due to the drive by the media for us to all be greener and more environmentally aware. In the past, we used to celebrate the fact that the earth was warming due to the fact that our summers were longer and hotter, but now we understand that this warming is not sustainable, and if it continues at the current rate then many coastal communities will become flooded and people will lose their lives. We are not only impacting ourselves with our lifestyles, but also the other inhabitants of our planet in the shape of flora and fauna as we see many plants and animals disappearing off the face of the earth before we get a chance to study them. In this article, we are going to take a look at how to raise awareness about the situation we have got ourselves in, and the benefits of green living, so read on to find out more.

Reduced Pollution

Reducing pollution is one of the biggest benefits of a green lifestyle and this can be evidenced in many different ways. The most obvious is in our use of plastics which continue to destroy the planet year after year. By ignoring all foodstuffs and consumer items that are packaged in plastic you can make a huge difference to the health of our oceans, and less plastic will be sent to landfill which will harm future generations. By simply refusing to use plastic yourself you will be spreading awareness as your friends and family will see the changes that you have made to your lifestyle and will follow suit. It may take a little bit of getting used to, but once you are in the habit of taking your own containers to the supermarket, and wrapping meat or fish in paper rather than plastic, you will hardly notice the changes you have made, yet you will be making a huge difference to the environment.

You Will Save Money

The perceived wisdom is that going green and living in an environmental manner will cost you more than living in the ‘traditional’ way, but actually, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Take your home heating, for example. You will probably have multiple radiators lining each room in a bid to keep them warm, drawing countless energy supplies from the grid that will probably have been produced using fossil fuels. Instead, you could be using the most efficient wood stoves and collecting sustainably sourced logs to burn, which are much more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels, and cost considerably less. So, just by making a simple change, you can benefit the planet and your wallet at the same time.

It is Healthier

When we talk about green living, we don’t just mean looking after the environment, we also mean eating and drinking in a green, sustainable fashion, and this can lead to us being much healthier at the same time. Fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, coupled with lean healthy meat and fish, are a much greener and healthier alternative to heavily processed packaged foods that could come from all over the planet. Firstly you will not be putting evil processed fats and sugars into your body, and secondly, you will be sourcing your food locally and sustainably which cuts down on those food miles, leading to less pollution and a reduction in global warming. Encourage others to do the same in your community and suddenly you will find that awareness amongst your peers will increase enormously.

Your Children Will Continue What You Started

If you have a family there is no way that you can embark on a green style of living without involving your children. Children are extremely impressionable so the earlier you involve them in your plans, then the likelier they will grow up with an environmentally friendly attitude to life. This can be infectious and in no time at all, they will be bragging to their chums about all the good things they are doing for the planet, and suddenly another family will be converted to the green style of living.

As we have learned there are many benefits of green living, not least that your change of lifestyle will rub off on other people increasing their awareness. Living in a green, sustainable fashion will help to reduce global pollution while saving you money at the same time. It is much healthier for both you and the planet and your children will continue what you have started, hopefully leading to a whole new generation that has sustainability and the environment at the forefront of their thoughts.
