Are Chatbots the Next Big Thing?

Businesses are always looking for new and innovative ways to interact and communicate with customers, especially with the constant evolution of technology. Once a bit of a novelty, chatbots are becoming more commonplace on a business website. Nordstrom was the first major player to introduce a helpful chatbot to assist clients with their shopping and it was an instant hit. It showed that clever bots can drastically change business processes like customer service and marketing, and the offering of deals and discounts.

The most valuable chatbots are those that communicate like a real human being would, and these are becoming increasingly realistic thanks to the use of artificial intelligence. Examples of these which you may have already used in everyday life are Siri or Alexa.

What is a Chatbot?

Put simply, a chatbot is a service that lets the user interact with a computer using a simple chat-like interface, much like the well
known messenger apps such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.

Types of chatbot

There are currently two main types of chatbot:

Rule based – These are the simpler bots that can only respond to specific commands. For example, they will only respond to questions based on keywords, and are fairly limited in their capabilities. They can’t understand complex conversations which can lead to contextual mistakes. Despite these issues, many businesses still prefer this type of bot due to how easily it can be created.

Machine learning bot – This type of bot utilizes the power of artificial intelligence to constantly learn from its conversations with people. They actually understand the language rather than simply searching for specific keywords. This uses a program called natural language processing, constantly evolving using both supervised and unsupervised learning.
